The photographs were taken in Romania in 2009 and 2010. For this series, the camera was placed behind the subject of photography or in the immediate vicinity. In adopting this particular position with regard to the subject, I assumed the distance necessary to understand my own place in the contemporary Romanian landscape. This distance in relation to the subject was revealed to be conducive to a renegotiation and a reshaping of my own identity. The act of following entails a level of de-personalization, doubled by the act of photographing which in a certain sense hides the gaze behind the mechanical camera. These two principles allowed me to explore the landscape by focusing on human subjects that were not chosen randomly. They attracted my attention through their ordinariness, revealing their social condition or triggering nostalgia.
